The Region of Ladakh
Ladakh – the land of high passes – is in northwestern India sandwiched between two of the highest mountain ranges in the world: the Karakoram and the Himalaya. It is a high-altitude desert where Ladakhis have learned to live with limited resources and be self- sufficient over the centuries. As one of the last strongholds of Tibetan Buddhism and a region where Buddhists and Muslims live side-by-side, Ladakh has a rich and unique cultural heritage.
Traveling there today you can listen to the age-old chanting of Buddhist monks in ancient monasteries, visit remote villages where the traditional way of life is vibrant, or walk through the bustling markets of the capital Leh, a former stopover for adventurous traders on the ancient silk route. Ladakh is home to some of the world's most fragile and magnificent ecosystems, endangered Snow Leopard habitat and nesting sights for rare migratory birds. In a world where pressures on the environment and traditional cultures may seem irreversible, Ladakh provides us with a glimmer of hope.
